Section 34 of the Employment Relations Act requires award limits to be changed if the Retail Prices Index (taken in September) changes in comparison to a previous year – in this instance there being a 1.4% decrease between 2008 and 2009. Different limits applying to Tribunal awards as well as other payments found in employment law will be decreasing. The most important change will therefore be the decrease in the compensatory award for unfair dismissal, decreasing from £66,200 to £65,300 as of the 1 February 2010.
