A recent Employment Appeals Tribunal decision, Da'Bell v NSPCC has increased the guideline figures for compensation for injury to feelings. Claimants in unfair dismissal cases can only recover compensation to cover economic loss. However, a claimant in a discrimination case can be awarded compensation for injury to feelings. In 2002, in the case of Vento v Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police guidance was provided by the Court of Appeal. Three bands were set for potential awards, and for some time afterwards tribunals and courts stuck to these Vento bands when making awards for injury to feelings. The increase has been as follows:
